Theoretical Core Courses

   Theory courses run with small numbers to maximise the learning outcomes

Day Skipper

An introductory course for all members of the family or crew, including those new to boating. Applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, jet skis, sea kayaks, and waka.

Aim: To gain essential boating knowledge and safety.
Duration: 15 Hours.
Qualification: NZ Day Skipper Certificate. Unit Standard 26542 (level 2, 6 credits) available. Prerequisites: None.

Boat Master

A comprehensive course for boaties with some existing knowledge and experience. Applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches and powerboats.

Aim: To gain detailed boating knowledge.
Duration: 30 Hours.
Qualification: NZ Boatmaster Certificate. Unit Standard 26541(level 3, 16 credits) available. Prerequisites: Day Skipper recommended.

Marine VHF Radio

The minimum requirement for all  users of Marine VHF Radio.

Aim: To learn correct Marine VHF Radio operation.
Duration: 6 Hours.                                                                                                                               

Prerequisites: None.

Marine Radio Operators Certificate

The minimum requirement for commercial operators and users of MF/HF (SSB) radio.


Aim: To learn correct MF/HF (SSB) radio operation.
Duration: 8 Hours/2 Hours for holders of Marine VHF Radio Operators Qualification.
Prerequisites: None.
Qualification: Maritime Restricted Operators Certificate (MROC). Unit Standard 19492 available.
